Information provided by Assistant Commissioners of England
Young People and Homelessness
Hi,

We are the assistant commissioners of England and we want to know what young people think about the area that they live in as well as issues that concern them. We are there to listen to young people and try to help achieve better things in their lives. How we find out what concerns young people is by holding numerous views and opinions days across the North East. We invite young people from local schools and clubs and ask them what concerns them and what issues they have. All the information we receive is recorded and reports are then made. After this they are finally sent down to London where the Children’s Commissioner Sir Al Aynsley Green will take the matter on from there. Recently we held one of these views and opinions days at Durham and around 30 young people came to attend this event. The day ran smoothly and refreshments were provided. These young people were also paid for the work they did and they provided lots of valuable information.
I managed to talk to one particular young person and found out an important issue that should be dealt with. The issue was that this young person was kicked out of her house by her mother, she did not know why. She was sat on the streets most of that night and then rang up social services who then arranged to pick her up with a police car. Once at the police station one of the police officers shouted at her, telling her what she did was wrong. She was very upset by this because she did not know what she did.
Things eventually worked out for this young person and she now lives with her foster carer. There are bound to be more people in similar situations. If we provide these young people with enough information they will be in a better position to get the help they need. Hopefully by trying to give more information to young people, they can make better choices in their life.
It is very important to hold these views and opinions days mainly because without the information we receive, children and young people could not help to make meaningful changes.
This one issue really affected me and the whole group of commissioners and we just knew something had to be done. We are now trying to get information about organizations that can help children and young people. We are trying to make helpline numbers and other useful telephone numbers available to as many people as possible so young people know what to do. We are trying to make this available on the Internet in schools so young people see it when they first go on the school computers. Most young people should get the advantage of viewing this page. If it is successful we hope to start to spread out a bit further than Durham! Hopefully this will help young people in desperate situations. This one step will allow us to become closer to helping some young people and making their lives better.
